'Live and create' cushion using free-motion sewing

I have some cushions that I made a while back from grey Ikea fabric with a white leaf and nut design. I only had a scrap of this fabric left so I decided to use it as the border of a design.

I used the free-motion sewing technique (which I LOVE, it's so much fun!) to 'write' on the white fabric. Then I sewed the grey Ikea fabric border around it and continued the leaf design on to the white fabric here and there. I added some red beads to dot the 'i's and made the design into a cushion cover.

Here are a few pictures I took along the way with a short explanation of the process:

First the design was 'written' with free-motion sewing.

I cut strips of the grey leaf fabric. I wanted the finished cushion 40 x 40cm, so I cut the strips based on this measurement. I frayed the edges of the white fabric. Then I pinned the grey fabric around the edge of the white, placing the leaf design where I wanted it to continue on to the white fabric.

I folded the corners diagonally and pinned in place.

Then sewed everything together, corners first, then white fabric on to grey border. I did two rows of sewing around the white fabric to prevent further fraying. Then the fun part - continuing the leaf design on to my white fabric.

Here is the underside of the cushion front.

I went over parts of the design again with more stitching, sewed some nut designs, added some beads then, when I was happy with it, I made up the cushion according to this method.

Have fun!
