Draping by the sea (Drape Drape 2, No. 4)

As if there wasn't already enough to do, I decided, the evening before our recent camping trip, that I could just quickly make a little something for myself to wear on holiday. After all, I couldn't waste the opportunity to take some blog pics with this beautiful backdrop.

The top is the 'one-piece scoop neck asymmetrical top' which is pattern No. 4 from Drape Drape 2 by Hisako Sato. Since it is made from only one piece of fabric I thought it would be pretty speedy to make. It was too. The most time consuming part was tracing the pattern, which had to be done in three separate sections and pieced together into a rather large and cumbersome sheet.

I used a piece of striped fabric from my stash that I'd bought ages ago in an op-shop for about $3. It was almost exactly the right amount, so only scraps left over. The black binding is some pre-cut lycra binding that I got in several colours at a recent sale at a swimwear factory. This stuff has been so useful. I've used it in place of fold-over elastic and bias binding on several things. I also used it as embellishment on this hemline.

I cut the L/XL size top and the fit is great. I like the way the top is loose and drapey at the top then snug around the hips. It's also cool how the sleeves are completely different to each other but you don't really notice that until you look closely. Same with the stripes which subtly go every which way due to the way the pattern is cut and folded.

This was a great choice for a holiday top. Casual enough for the beach, but stylish enough to fit in with the boutique/cafe set in the village. I'm looking forward to making more from the Drape Drape books.

By the way, don't be fooled by these tranquil-looking photos. While they were being taken, the boys were wreaking their usual havoc up and down the beach with snorkels and skim boards.

Then, when they tired of that, they buried poor Truffle.

Lucky he's so docile :)

I love this top. I have a similar pattern in my stash and have been wondering how it would go with stripes. I may also have to buy this book!

My kids laughed at your poor dog. I know mine is placid but I can't see her letting the kids cover her in sand. You are lucky to be able to take her/him camping. Their are very few camping grounds in New Zealand that allow dogs. Cafes and camping sound like my sort of holiday!

The top looks great, especially with that tan. I trust you had a great holiday, even Truffle...

Love your top (and the buried dog photo!). You have made a couple of great Drape Drape garments. This is another to add to the collection. But, why do you keep teasing us with hints of a swimwear warehouse sale without letting a fellow Perth girl in on the secret?

Very nice. I also really liked the drape dress you did. Wondering if I could make the pattern myself of if I should get the book, now 2 nice things maybe the book is winning! I think I spotted you in dunsborough. Was eating fish and chips at the front with my girls and recognised your turquoise jacket from your blog, which I had just discovered the day before! Should have come to say hello but wasn't sure about interrupting but anyway probably should have as maybe makes me a bit more of a weird blog stalker not to!! So hello, realty like you blog and have added it to my list.

Thank you, we had a lovely holiday, especially Truffle! He is such an important member of the family :)

I am so inspired by these Drape Drape books. They are definitely easier than Pattern Magic, but still have unique and lovely styles. Pattern Magic is definitely for bold and brave sewing days only (for me anyway!).

I'm sure your kids would have laughed even more if they'd seen wet and sandy Truff sleeping on my bed later that night. I couldn't move my legs, but he was so comfy I couldn't bear to disturb him :) More and more campsites here seem to be realising that people want their dogs on holiday, which is great.

Really!!? That's awesome. Which one(s) are you ordering? I have all three books in the series but the third is in Japanese, which is a bit daunting! There are some lovely styles in it though that I am promising myself I will tackle soon. I'm so pleased you like my top :)

I know, I'm so sorry about that but I think you may just be too late for the sale as it was only for a few days. I found out about it because it was posted on the Perth Burda Sewing Club Facebook page (originally advertised on Gumtree). It was Daneechi swimwear selling off a whole heap of fabric, trims, bra cups etc. for fantastic prices. They are having to move their production offshore as it is too expensive to produce swimwear in Aus these days :( Such a shame. If I ever hear of another good sale, I will be sure to let you know! Promise.

Oh my gosh, I feel like a celebrity being recognised from my blog! You should definitely have said hello, although I know what you mean about feeling like a weird stalker. I was the same when I recognised a blogger one time and scuttled off without saying anything! I'm so pleased you like my blog and I will definitely be checking out yours :)

Thank you so much for the comment. I gather you are living in the UK from your other comment. I hope these pictures don't make you too homesick! I lived in the UK for five years and missed Perth terribly.
