So here we are folks, me all dressed up for a change!
This has been my big project for the last week - the 'Haltertop Hussy' by Savage Coco Patterns.

This is the second dress I have made with a Savage Coco pattern, the first was the gorgeous 'Elegant Escape dress', and both times I have been lucky enough to receive a free pattern for testing. Somehow the sample patterns have been exactly in my size and I made this very fitted dress with no muslin or alterations at all - lucky or what?
All the Savage Coco patterns are based on va va voom dresses from old movies. The wearer of the dress is 'the heroine' and Coco makes suggestions of glamorous plots and gorgeous accessories to complete the look and the story. I love this concept as, in my head, I am the heroine (don't tell anyone, how embarrassing!), which makes me feel fabulous wearing them. This 'hussy' dress is based on the one worn by Grace Kelly in 'Rear Window'.
I made my dress from white linen bought in Bali and some light, stretchy denim from Homecraft Textiles.
I really enjoyed making this dress and the process proved to me something that I have suspected for some time - that I'm evolving in my sewing from a bit of a slap-dash-get-the-job-done-quick sewist to more of a enjoy-the-ride-and-get-it-right creator. I learnt a lot making this and loved the step-by-step process (many, many steps) of putting this together and making it as perfect as I could.
Fortunately, Coco has a very detailed tutorial for this dress on her blog and I followed it to the letter. There were a few times when I doubted what I was doing, but I swallowed my doubts and fears and gradually it came together. It was an interesting process as there was nothing to try on at all until quite far along in the construction of this dress. This was difficult for me as I had no idea if it was going to fit or work out until I had already put in a lot of work. I was desperate to have something to try on! I was also extremely keen to complete step 13, so keen in fact that I completely messed up step 12 and had to redo it. Step 13 then ended up being so rewarding that I repeated it a few more times between the remaining steps of the dress!
The dress is fitted and fully lined in white cotton fabric. It has an invisible zip at the back and a waist stay to keep the dress in place on the body (a new concept for casual old moi) and I even made the belt!!
Look at that belt - so proud!
The design is very clever in that the two folded flaps at the back, follow the curve under the arms...
...up and around to the back where the fold inverts itself and hides the seam and pleats at the back of the halterneck. Very neat.
The pleats at the waist are very flattering too. Coco says that this design is bust enhancing. I don't need to be any more busty so I was a bit worried about this, but I think the top is perfect. In these pictures I am wearing a strapless bra, which sits nicely under the curve of the top at the back.
My inner hussy has been released and I couldn't be happier. Now I need the perfect event to which I can
Thank you so much to Savage Coco Patterns for the opportunity to test this fabulous pattern.

Wow lovely, what an unusual pattern. Totally not what I was expecting, imagined the collar detail being somewhere near your neck!
Lovely dress.
Meg, your Hussy is absolutely outstanding! It's gorgeous on you! That's really lovely fabric from Bali, it was the perfect choice. The fit is wonderful, so it's pretty obvious you had an inner Hussy ready to be released . . .
Oh, and that Step 12 can be a bit of a noggin scratcher but fortunately Step 13 is very rewarding. I repeated Step 13 several times. Which may account for any typos in the instructions.
You've done The Heroine so very, very proud!
Coco
Your sewing's fine, but honestly, the dress is not. The halter top swamps you. The diagonal edge running from your neck to your waist looks terrible. Far from enhancing your bust, it completely disappears. Sorry, but this one's not really ready for test sewing yet, IMO.
overall i love this...your navy & white combo is incredibly chic. im wondering though, is there risk of flashing side boob sans underthings?
ha ha! Yes, I guess it could have looked like a neck collar in the previous picture. Thank you for the comment :)
Thank you very much!
Thank you Coco, I am really happy with this dress and the fit is amazing. I think this is a fabulous pattern and I can't wait to hussy on out to somewhere appropriate, rather than just the garden!
Thank you for your comment. It is interesting to hear your point of view. I guess that there are bound to be differences of opinion on what looks good, particularly with a more unusual garment, such as this one. I disagree about the fit though and I like the wrap style of the top. Luckily we are all different or the world would be a boring place!
Thank you, I'm so pleased (and a bit relieved after the last comment). As for the side boob, there is no problem with flashing. The halterneck and the internal waist-stay keep the top pretty firmly in place. I took lots of photos of this with my arms up and down, twisting round etc. and there was no flashing at all - yay!
You look gorgeous! The style shows off your arms and the overall impression is very sophisticated. I love halternecks and find them flattering but I've also been told that the area below my neck has a lot of sun damage (more than my face, for some reason) so I've been wondering what kind of styles would keep that part hidden in the sun without looking buttoned up. Not that there's much sunshine around here these days.
I enjoyed reading about your fabric shopping in Bali. Thinking of going back?
Love the dress! Great photos, it looks so gorgeous on you! I thought first that it was a top and a skirt.. Would love to try this pattern..
Wow!!! Your dress looks FANTASTIC!!!! I love the white with blue...very fresh!!
Thanks Marianna, I agree that this looks sophisticated and covers up the décolleté, but is still sexy with the cut away bits elsewhere. Bali was blissful and I often dream of doing more fabric shopping there. It's actually cheaper to fly there from Perth than to drive and stay at some of our local holiday places, so I'm sure we'll go back one day :)
Thank you so much, I'm pleased you like the photos too, it just happened to be the perfect time of day for the sunlight!
Thank you for your enthusiasm, it is very much appreciated!
I love it. My favorite part is the pleat detail at the waist. ~Major Moma
Wow - I'm really liking this!!! So VERY glamourous, but in an everyday material which makes it so wearable. It looks gorgeous with the skirt too :)
I'm seriously so far behind on my blog reading right now - even on my own - I'd be more than happy to send you a traced out copy of my Tigerlily shorts pattern if you'd like? Being over in sunny Perth, you should still be able to get some wear out of them even this late in the piece! Let me know :)
Thank you :) I think that's probably my favourite part too!
Gasp! Really? Woot woot! - replied via email :)
