I loved the Japanese-influenced patterns from the June 2014 issue of Burdastyle and have finally got round to making something from the collection. This is the 'twisted cap-sleeve dress', so called because the side seams and sleeves are asymmetrical, causing both to twist. As the wearer puts on the dress, the lower half needs to be twisted, moving the side seams to the sides and producing subtle wrinkles across the torso.

Indigo kit from Dharma Trading |
Here is the dress on the mannequin before dyeing.
I folded some of the front of the dress into fairly even pleats and hand stitched them loosely in place so the dye would penetrate most of the fabric and produce subtle stripes.
Then into the dye it went. Elbow-length gloves for me!
Here's how the pattern looked when it came out of the dye.
When it dried it was lighter and the neckline had some dark splotches, but that's all part of the unpredictability and fun of natural dyeing.

I think you have done an excellent job with this dress. I love the striped patterns created in the dye job and the colour is lovely on you.
That dyeing technique is great! I love the effect that it produced. You'd never guess that the original dress and your dyed dress are one and the same. You really brought it to life.
I have had that kit for a while and not used it...yours certainly came out lighter than I would have expected. I like your method of stitching the dress before dyeing.
I think this is lovely - the dye technique is really interesting.
I should have said I swirled it below the surface of the dye for about five minutes. You can dip the fabric more times for a darker colour, but I just did it once for this dress. You should try your kit, it's great fun. The children will love it too.
Gosh, thank you!
Thank you. The fabric was great quality but very boring before.
So please you like it. Thank you!
Madame, very Picasso. I don't know about that twisted, off-kilter seam-ege business, tho. I know I'd be tugging at it all day long. But I'm a twisted mess anyway. Let's not go there. You, as per usual, make it all so effortless!
The Savage One
came out beautiful.
Very interesting design with the twist feature and your subtle dye technique totally transformed the dress. Great work!
When I saw this on IG I thought you had sewn some sort of band through the middle. The tie dyeing is REALLY clever. I don't think it's too tight at all. It is perfect on you. VPL? Go commando - just don't fall over
I love this dress and the process you went through to make it your own. You look fabulous in it too, as lovely as the Burda model.
I'm with Coco with the twisted thing, but I love the dyed effect and the dress looks lovely on you.
Ha! Not effortless at all I'm afraid. I was breathing in and tugging it round all day!
Thank you :)
Thank you, it seems opinions on the twist vary quite a bit!
Ha ha, I'll do it if you do! Glad you like the dyeing. Playing with shibori is so much fun.
You are way too kind, but thank you for the lovely comment.
I'm not sold on the twist either. So pleased you like the dyeing.
