Way back at the beginning of the year, Carolyn asked for testers for her first pattern. I jumped at the chance. The Perth Dress appears to be a classic shirt dress at first glance, but it has a unique collar opening detail that creates a pleat from the front neckline.
A single button is cleverly used to close both sides of the neckline opening. The sleeves and a back yoke and pleat continue the shirt-like vibe of the dress.
I used a lightweight shirting cotton for the dress, which my son tells me makes it look like a hospital gown. Now he's said that I am tending to agree. I may decide to convert this one into a top and try a dress in a different fabric.

I must say that the neckline fascinates me - it looks so clever. I was sad to miss the testing process for this dress.
The neckline and the pleat is what makes this dress so special. IMHO, I would just add some embellishment to the hemline before cutting it off.
I agree with Carolyn - the neckline is the interesting part, but try something else before you cut it off. Brown leather belt?
I have been following your blog from the very beginning and love the things you make, but this one, not so much. I can see what your son means about the hospital gown. The sleeves are a rather frumpy length and the back is too wide. I do not like the pleat at the front at all, I think it looks a little like a maternity dress. The collar is very interesting, but I live in Queensland and I'm not sure I could put up with a high neck like this in the summer. Can it be left undone? I had never heard of the designer, and did a bit of checking and discovered that she is another home sewer turned pattern maker - sigh. This would account for the fit issues I suspect.

Thank you for your comment. I really appreciate your honesty. I also prefer looser/lower necklines for comfort, even in cooler weather, so this isn't for everyone. The designer is a personal friend and I was happy to support her. I'm so pleased you like my other things and hope you continue to read my blog :)
I think you should be congratulated on your honesty. I am so tired of reading positive things about patterns that just aren't that nice. I wasn't going to post here in case I offended anyone, but you have motivated me. I totally agree with your comments. This dress just doesn't suit Meggipeg, and she has a lovely figure which should be showed off. I think the whole dress is frumpy not just the sleeves. I think it would only suit someone who has a very small bust.
Thank you for your kind words about my figure! I think you are right about the dress being better suited to people with a small bust. I do find my protuberances cause the pleat to form an odd shape from certain angles and I find myself fussing with it in the mirror. That is partly why I thought a top might be a better option for me. Thank you for the honest comment.
