As I mentioned in my last post, I received the Japanese pattern books 'Drape Drape 1' and 'Drape Drape 3' for Christmas. I now have the set of three - yippee! The first two are in English and the third is in Japanese. I have decided to make a few things from the English books first so I can become familiar with the way they do things, before tackling something from the Japanese book.
Last year I made dress No. 2 from 'Drape Drape 2' and this year I've made top No. 1 from 'Drape Drape 1' - and it's only 4 days into this year, good going so far, although this one was rather simple!
Once the pattern was traced, this top went together very quickly. I used a lightweight knit fabric from the bargain table at Textile Traders. It drapes beautifully, so was perfect for this top.
The edge of the draped neckline, which falls to the inside of the top, is finished with a simple, rolled hem, the folded to the inside and caught in the armhole binding at the shoulder to hold it in place. The picture below shows this from the inside of the top.
I am really pleased with this top. It was quick and simple to make and is very easy to wear. The only thing I will change is to add some little tabs to sit under my bra strap and hold the shoulders in place. I did have one or two wardrobe malfunctions out in the wind the first time I wore this top! Luckily I had a crop top underneath.

Love your version! I have made the same top in a delicious linen knit. Being a shortie the cowl is rather indecent on me - a crop top and lingerie straps were a necessity!

I'd love to see your version, do you have online pics anywhere? There aren't too many pictures or reviews of these Drape Drape items online and I do like to see a picture before I make something. Thank you :) There is nothing to be afraid of when sewing knits, especially for someone of your high abilities. Just make sure you cut out the pattern with the stretch going round the body. Otherwise, just sew as for wovens. You only need to stretch the fabric when sewing in neckbands or cuffs or doing slightly fancy stuff like a lettuce hem. I love using knits, they're easy to sew and great to wear. Gor for it girlfriend!!
It's very pretty-I wanted to make this when I first got the book and then ended up not doing so because the neckline was way to deep. Did you adjust that at all?
Thank you :) I was worried about the neckline too, but decided that it was worth a try with this inexpensive fabric. I made the XL size and didn't adjust it at all. I am usually an Aussie size 10-12 top and about 5'9 tall. The neckline is just on the verge of being too low at the front, but fine with a cami underneath. You should make one!
Your top is lovely. I might be inspired to try some Japanese patterns this year...now which book to buy!
